No matter how you heat your home, your energy bills can skyrocket during the winter. Don’t let bills eat up your budget this winter! The professionals at Advance Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning in Greenville, NC have put together a list of the best ways to reduce your heating bills, while boosting the efficiency of your system and reducing wasted energy! And a bonus – many of these tips won’t cost you a dime!

1. Turn the Thermostat Down

Did you know that you save up to 3% on your heating bill per degree lowered over a 24-hour period? Those saving can really add up! Consider lowering your thermostat to cooler than normal when you aren’t home or when you are asleep. Installing a programmable thermostat makes regulating the temperature easier!

2. Use Your Fans

Here’s a quick and easy tip – to circulate the warm air that gets trapped near the ceiling, set your fans to rotate clockwise at a low speed. The gentle updraft forces the warm air back down.

3. Keep Vents Clear

Make sure that your vents and radiators are not blocked by any type of furniture or rugs. By keeping these clear you will be able to take full advantage of the warm air entering your home, plus it puts less strain on your heating system!

4. Change Air Filters

If we’ve said this once, we’ve said it a million times! Clean air filters allow a better flow of air from your heating system. Make sure that you are changing your air filters monthly, or whenever they are dirty. Not only does this help to heat your home more efficiently, it also reduces strain on your equipment and provides cleaner, healthier air to your home! Check out our Filter Fetch program – it makes changing your air filters easy!

5. Seal Leaky Windows and Doors

It is estimated that up to 12% of heat loss in a home is due to leaky windows and doors. Check your home for any problem areas where you may be losing heat to leaks. Weather stripping, caulking and rubber installation are great ways seal these leaks. Also, if you can see daylight under any exterior doors, install a door sweep to prevent warm air from getting out and cold air from getting in.

6. Get an HVAC Tune-Up

It pays to have your heating and cooling system serviced at least once a year. An Advance Mechanical technician will go over your entire system, clean out debris and remove clogs, and ensure that your system is working at maximum efficiency.

Following these tips can help put a major dent in your monthly heating bill. Even better, these simple steps cost little to nothing to put into place, so most of your savings can stay right in your wallet.
