Tariffs and R-454 Shortages, Why Maintenance Matters

Posted on

There has been ongoing discussion regarding tariffs on imported goods in recent months. Although there has been a pause in some tariffs, the proposed tariffs for Chinese imports could impact the HVAC industry. We want to provide you with some helpful information on the tariffs and R-454 shortages, and why maintenance is important for keeping your home comfortable this summer. Keep reading to find out what we currently know and what you can expect in the months ahead.

How is HVAC Affected by Tariffs?

The HVAC industry relies heavily on globally sourced components, many of which originate from China. These components are needed to install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems. Chinese manufacturers supply raw materials along with specialized electronics, control boards, and compressors for the HVAC industry, so tariffs affect the cost of new systems, replacement parts, and ongoing maintenance.

What Does This Mean for Customers?

Tariffs could also have consequences beyond just pricing, as shipments could be delayed, causing bottlenecks in receiving materials. The HVAC system is affected by tariffs from procurement to installation and ongoing service. If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, you may want to consider a replacement sooner rather than later. Repairs could be more expensive as the cost of parts increases, and they could take longer to receive. If you act now, you may be able to avoid any significant effects, as a new HVAC system should not require repairs beyond regular maintenance.

What is Happening with R-454B Refrigerant?

In addition to the tariffs, the HVAC industry faces another predicament: the growing shortage of R-454B refrigerant cylinders. Even though new HVAC systems are pre-charged with the refrigerant, some consumers are concerned about the availability of R-454B and want to hold off on new installations. What started as a smooth transition from R-410A to the new refrigerant has evolved into a complex logistics problem, with HVAC suppliers and distributors adjusting their inventory and strategies to provide better customer solutions.

What Should You Do?

So, how can you keep your family comfortable until the HVAC industry levels out again? We want to remind our customers about the importance of regular maintenance and filter changes.

Regular maintenance on your HVAC unit can increase its efficiency and lifespan by years. Our Comfort Club members receive two yearly maintenance visits, which can require fewer HVAC repairs and potentially lower utility bills. Our customers get peace of mind knowing that their system is getting the care it needs from a knowledgeable team they can trust. Catching problems early helps reduce the risk of expensive emergency repairs down the line.

In addition to your technician’s preventative maintenance, you can follow seasonal checklists to prolong your HVAC unit’s lifespan. Consider changing your air filters regularly, clearing away debris and leaves from around your outdoor unit, and sealing any leaks you may find around doors and windows. These quick prevention methods may seem meaningless, but they can save you time and money later.

Given the significant change the industry is currently going through, anything you can do to ensure your HVAC system is running efficiently and properly will help alleviate any significant risks down the road. The Advance Mechanical team is prepared to help in any way we can by answering questions, providing the same quality service you are accustomed to, and staying customer committed.
