Everything You Need to Know About Purchasing a HVAC System

Blog Cover that reads

Purchasing a new HVAC system can seem intimidating, but Advance Mechanical Heating and Air Conditioning is here to help and make the process as easy as possible! We’ve put together a list of everything you need to know before you buy your new system.

Prepare

The first step is to prepare. Of course, you need to make sure that your old unit actually does need to be replaced. It is possible that your system can be repaired, if there are only minor issues. But, if your system still uses R-22, also known as Freon, an upgrade is necessary to comply with federal regulations. You can learn more about the R-22 phase out in our blog, “How Will The R-22 (Freon) Phase Out Affect Your HVAC System”. Generally, a furnace can last 12 to 18 years with proper maintenance, and an air conditioner can last 10 to 16 years. If your unit is older it may run inefficiently and/or require a lot of maintenance. In the long run, replacing the system can save you money!

Make sure you know these facts about your system:

  • The age of your system.
  • The maintenance history of your system.

Research

Once you’ve prepared and know a little more about the life of your old system, it’s time to contact Advance Mechanical. We can help you determine if you need to replace it. If so, we’ll suggest the right size and efficiency your home will need. It is important that you work with a reputable company on picking the right unit. If you purchase a unit that is too big, it can cause uneven temperature problems in your home. In this case, bigger is not always better. You need to have an appropriately sized system.

You also need to consider energy efficiency. The SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) can help you make your decision. In eastern North Carolina, the minimum SEER rating is 14, anything above 16 is considered high efficiency. Higher efficiency systems are not only great for your home’s comfort, but for your wallet as you can save on monthly energy bills!

Here are a few more things you should look into when researching a new system.

Purchase and Install

Now that you’ve worked with us to determine the perfect system to meet your needs, it’s time for installation. Typically, installation takes about a day, although it can take a little longer if you are having an air cleaner or humidifier installed at the same time. We also recommend installing a programmable thermostat to maximize your system’s energy efficiency!

Finally, almost as important as the system you are purchasing, you need to have confidence in the installation technician. At Advance Mechanical, all of our team members are background checked, highly trained and experienced!
